QUANTIC

celebrating the release of:

“CALIVENTURA REMIXES EP’”

The “Caliventura Remix EP,” out on March 15th , sees US based producers Cut Chemist, J Boogie, Jeremy Sole, Daedelus and DJ Day giving the

remix treatment to a handful of tracks from Quantic and His Combo Ba?rbaro’s immensely acclaimed ‘Tradition In Transition’ album. The EP

also features an alternative, previously unreleased version of the album track, “Albela.” This essential EP comes in a full color picture

sleeve featuring a photograph taken in Colombia by the celebrated LA-based photographer B+ (Mochilla), who has become a

key contributor to the Quantic aesthetic in recent years, and whose critically acclaimed body of work includes the famous

shot for DJ Shadow’s ‘Endtroducing.’ Inside the beautiful sleeve, you’ll also find an exclusive download card with all five

vinyl tracks available on mp3, plus five bonus goodies.
Quantic is an umbrella name for UK-born, Will Holland: acclaimed Producer, Musician, DJ for over 15 years, evolving and involving

various styles like Funk & Jazz to Electronic & Folk music through to Latin, Reggae, Dub & Cumbia. Holland has released over ten full-length

albums internationally through the label, Tru Thoughts, across six different projects ranging from his DJ/Producer/Remixer moniker

that has packed dance floors from Bulgaria to Buenos Aires, Quantic, to Latin-tinged, reggae and dub exploration, Flowering Inferno,

to a full-out soul band, The Quantic Soul Orchestra.
Based in the musical epicenter of Cali, Colombia since 2007, Holland has been exploring cumbias, salsa and Afro-Colombian music

through his particular beat-focused, electronic and funk lens. His latest live band project, Quantic y Su Combo Bárbaro, a carefully

assembled international cast of musical creators including virtuosic salsa pianist Alfredo Linares and Pacific folklore singer Nidia Gongora,

is a bold snapshot of an ever-evolving musical landscape in the Americas. Holland also works and exchanges with a cross-section

of artists and producers innovatively shaping contemporary music from Latin America as we speak.
‘One of the songs to be remixed on this EP is ‘Un Canto A Mi Tierra’ featuring a stunning vocal turn from Colombian folklore

singer Nidia Go?ngora – the original version, released as a single and video last year, has had over 150,000 YouTube hits and

continues to be adored around the world as one of the most popular cuts from the album. The reworks from J-Boogie and

Cut Chemist will doubtless bring even more new fans to the track. You’ll also find the Daedelus and Computer Jay remix

of the glorious instrumental track, “Undelivered Letter,” which flips this tune on its head – from classically beautiful, sweeping

soundscape to up- to-the-minute glitch fest – in a bold and successful piece of genre- hopping.

AFRO FUNKE’ PRESENTS

CUT CHEMIST

celebrating the release of:

“SOUND OF THE POLICE

CUT CHEMIST has been on hiatus working on new music since the release of his first full-length solo album, 2006’s The Audience’s Listening

(Warner Brothers Records) and teaming up with DJ Shadow for their 2007 seminal live Hollywood Bowl show and corresponding tour for

The Hard Sell. Before the pioneering turntablist and producer releases his next full length LP he has put together a live mix CD to re

introduce himself entitled SOUND OF THE POLICE. Due out March 2011, it uses music from and inspired by Africa and South America

and as it’s title references, Cut’s hip-hop roots tips his hat to the classic BDP song but more importantly referencing Ethiopia’s military bands

which was his primary influence to make this mix.

Different than the traditional mix CD using two turntables, this exclusive offering was created live using only one turntable, a mixer, a loop pedal

and all original vinyl pressings. Cut thought when performing this mix live it would challenge the contemporary DJ as well as himself. The music

chosen for this mix goes quite a bit deeper into the crate than his other contributions. Driven by his passion for Ethiopian, Colombian, Sudanese

and Afro-Brazilian sounds respectively, this mix also features a few classic tunes you might recognize. Sound Of The Police puts it all in the

context to help the listener remember that hip hop culture is indeed rooted in Africa.

Originally Sound Of The Police was only intended to be a one time performance for Mochilla’s Timeless concert series opening up for Ethiopia’s

own Mulatu Astatke in 2009. He recorded the practice session and after the success of that performance he thought it deserved to be heard and

seen by as many people as possible. The live performance attempts to be a reenactment of the CD but with cameras on the turntable and loop

pedal so the audience understands exactly how the records are being manipulated. “You don’t have to be into DJs to enjoy this show. It’s like

walking a sonic tight rope and the audience gets to see me fall if something goes wrong,” Cut says. “The interesting parts are when I mess up

and fix it. The audience goes crazy and appreciates what a difficult balancing act this actually is.”

Sound Of The Police proves Cut Chemist is still pushing the envelope when it comes to live DJing. It combines entertainment with music

and cultural education. Cuts always used these elements when it comes to his music and he won’t stop. “It’s important to widen peoples

musical vocabulary and I feel its my job as a DJ to do so.” While Cut is finishing his sophomore solo LP, Sound Of The Police will tide fans

over with unique DJ skills and an eclectic blend of music from around the world.

As a founding member of seminal Los Angeles groups Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli, Cut Chemist has been producing and releasing music for

almost 20 years. He has also released a series of highly acclaimed mix CD’s with DJ Shadow including influential albums Brianfreeze

and Product Placement. Upon his exit from Jurassic 5 he released The Audiences Listening which showed that he could produce a wide

range of musical styles. He has toured extensively for the last few years with a stunning audio visual performance that brought a whole new

dimension to his sound and he has made cameo appearances in the films “Juno” and “Up In The Air.”

RICH MEDINA
There are few nightclub DJs that have accomplished as much on a global scale as Rich Medina.
From his humble beginnings as a young b-boy-turned-DJ in Lakewood, NJ, to his current status
manning the decks as one of the most popular DJs in Philadelphia NYC, Rich Medina has consistently taken multi-ethnic crowds on a sonic journey through hip-hop, house, Afrobeat, funk and soul, unearthing one musical gem fter another, for almost 20 years.

Rich Medina cemented his name in the DJ world with his infamous 90’s partnership with Cosmo Bakerat The Remedy in Philadelphia. In 1998, his Fun party with DJ Language was part of turning the Lower East Side of Manhattan into the new hot spot for club life. Then came the mother lode,
Lil’ Ricky’s Rib Shack, a weekly dance function that started out as a 20-person party at APT in 2001, and evolved into an irreplaceable mid-week NYC institution for over 8 years. There, he connected with fan and hip-hop legend Q-Tip in 2005, eventually combining forces to create the Friday night weekly called Open at the Andrew W.K.-owned Santos Party House in 2007, and was soon considered the hottest Friday night party in NYC for the next 2 years.

No less revered is Rich’s Happy Feet party—where he and another pioneer of the turntables,
Nuyorican DJ Bobbito Garcia have traded off dance, salsa, and soul music at clubs all around the
world. Next of his branded events in line would be Props, the continuation of Li’l Ricky’s since the
closing of APT in March of 2010. In 2008, he also co-founded What The Funke, a James
Brown/Fela Kuti tribute party with DJ Spinna.

In addition to his own events, Rich has performed in front of crowds of thousands, DJing shows
with artists like Lauryn Hill, De La Soul, Erykah Badu, Seun Kuti, Tony Allen, Nathan Haines,
Roy Ayers, Gil Scott-Heron, The Roots, Jill Scott, Antibalas, Zap Mama, and Femi Kuti, among
many others. From NYC to LA to London to Tokyo, and everywhere in between, music lovers
know not to miss a club night when Rich Medina is manning the decks.

So last week I almost got taken by an internet scam. I got an email from my buddy Justin that he had gotten robbed at gun point while on an impromptu visit to Europe and needed cash to get back home, which since he left Cali due to its ailing economy and would totally be the type of friend to do that type of thing, seemed pretty plausible. Long story short, it was a scam. But it almost got me. And then there was an earthquake. At some point in all that I guess I was forced to realize just how lucky I’ve been. So what do you do when you get everything you could ever ask for? Also I got busy. In every sense of the word, lol. Life has exploded and I’m just trying to ride the wave. No seriously, as some friends like to joke I’ve now went from no job to like 6 jobs, lol. But it’s good. In fact it’s awesome. Life is awesome and I am blessed. Between kcrw, first fridays, afro-funke@zanzibar, a new job, gigs, and basketball I don’t have enough time anymore. But it’s awesome! I’m blessed. Always have been. I have some of the best family and friends. I’m so fucking lucky! Some people aren’t…

And I’m not trying to be a downer so as I as my close Haitian friend says, at least it’s getting the world to focus on Haiti for a minute and hopefully can be turned into a positive for the country in the long run. And I think sometimes we get a bit self-absorbed here sometimes and I guess this really puts some of that in perspective.

So instead of sending anything to Justin

Send a little something their way… You can figure out how you can do that best.

Oh yeah I got some events I’ll be at…

Oh shit, I’m already late for this first one, lol.
